The Salthús Gueshouse building was built in 1950 by Skagstrendingur, a local fisheries company, and served various purposes for the fishing industry through the years. The house was completely rebuilt and renovated in 2017, into the Salthús Guesthouse.
The town of Skagaströnd is a fishing village in Northwest Iceland, where fisheries and trade has long been the main livelihood. The town is is gaining popularity as an artist colony, with NES Artist Residency at the forefront of that change and plans to open an art gallery and museum in the near future. The Salthús Gueshouse collaborates with NES. For those artists that would like a full Artist Residency experience, please visit the website of Nes Artist Residency.

In Skagaströnd you get a unique chance of immersing yourself, once one’s “soul” understands that one can hardly do anything but calm down, enjoy the landscape and reflect…The Salthouse is a good place to stay. The newly furnished rooms have good beds and a work desk, and the two spacious common kitchens are well-equipped, so you have good opportunities to cook yourself or just meet with the other residents around the tables.

My stay at Salthus was wonderful – incredibly productive! I am still missing everything about my stay even after being back home for several weeks.

I relished the change of pace and the luxury of time that allowed a sense of awe to permeate my life every day that I spent there. The entire experience was nothing short of magical for me in that it produced new roots and a sense of being (in a new) home. Skagastrond itself is a mixture of a peaceful and yet pleasantly lively community… Everything was new to me – and yet, I felt so much “at home.” A good amount of credit for this very positive experience derives from the place where I actually resided (Salthus Guesthouse)… The siting of the Guesthouse could not have been better – overlooking the ocean, next to hills laden with historical significance, walking distance to town and to the artist studios, etc. I can hardly wait to return….
